A New Orleans man is facing a federal prison sentence after admitting to a high-stakes cocaine deal that unraveled on the interstate. GABRIEL CARRETO-SANCHEZ, age 41, pleaded guilty to one count of Conspiracy to Distribute One Kilogram or more of Cocaine, and one count of Possession with the Intent to Distribute One Kilogram or more of Cocaine, according to U.S. Attorney Duane A. Evans.
The scheme collapsed in April 2017 when CARRETO-SANCHEZ returned from Houston, Texas, where he picked up approximately one kilogram of cocaine hydrochloride from a supplier. Loaded with a street-level payload worth tens of thousands of dollars, he drove back toward Louisiana—straight into the hands of federal agents.
As he re-entered the region, members of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (“FBI”) stopped his vehicle. Hidden within the car, agents found the kilogram of cocaine. The haul alone triggers mandatory minimum sentencing under federal law, exposing CARRETO-SANCHEZ to a prison term of between five and forty years.
CARRETO-SANCHEZ did not contest the evidence. In court, he formally admitted to the conspiracy and the possession charge, effectively sealing his fate in the eyes of the justice system. No plea deal details have been released, but the admission strips away any chance of walking free.
U.S. Attorney Evans credited the FBI with dismantling the operation, calling their work ‘critical’ in intercepting a major drug shipment before it flooded New Orleans streets. Federal drug interdiction efforts have intensified along the I-10 corridor, a known trafficking route between Texas and the Gulf Coast.
The prosecution was handled by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan L. Shih. Sentencing for GABRIEL CARRETO-SANCHEZ, of New Orleans, is pending before a U.S. District Judge, with federal authorities vowing no leniency for those moving bulk narcotics across state lines.
