California Gov. Gavin Newsom’s former chief of staff indicted on federal charges

A federal grand jury has indicted Gabriel T. Nadales, the former chief of staff to California Gov. Gavin Newsom, on charges of conspiracy to commit honest services wire fraud and honest services wire fraud, according to a press release from the U.S. Department of Justice.

The indictment alleges that Nadales, 44, of Sacramento, California, used his position to obtain valuable consideration from a lobbyist in exchange for his official actions, including advocating for the lobbyist’s clients and providing them with access to the governor and other state officials.

The indictment was returned on March 7, 2024 and was unsealed on April 12, 2024, after Nadales was arrested and made his initial appearance in federal court in Sacramento.

According to the press release, Nadales is accused of using his position to obtain valuable consideration from the lobbyist, including cash and other things of value, in exchange for his official actions.

The case is being prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of California and is being investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation.
