ROANOKE, VA – Another gun trafficker headed to federal prison this week, thanks to a solid ATF investigation. Garland Thomas Lawton, 25, of Roanoke, received a 42-month sentence for playing a dangerous game: buying a gun for someone who was legally barred from owning one. Lawton admitted to lying to a federal firearms dealer to facilitate the illegal purchase.
According to court documents, Lawton walked into Doomsday Tactical on May 22, 2020, and purchased a Taurus 9mm pistol. He swore under oath that he was the intended owner. A bald-faced lie. The truth? He was acting as a middleman for Jermaine Drummond, a convicted felon who couldn’t legally possess a firearm. Drummond paid Lawton $220 in cash for the service – a dangerous transaction that put a weapon in the hands of someone already deemed a threat.
The feds didn’t let this slip through the cracks. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) traced the gun, and it surfaced over two years later, on September 10, 2022, in Maryland. It wasn’t just lost; it was connected to other criminal activity, proving the ripple effect of these illegal gun swaps. Lawton pleaded guilty in February 2023 to one count of making a false statement to a federal firearms licensee.
U.S. Attorney Christopher R. Kavanaugh of the Western District of Virginia made it clear this isn’t just about one gun. “This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods,” Kavanaugh stated, “a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement to reduce violent crime and gun violence.” But programs only work if the criminals are held accountable, and in this case, they were.
Acting Special Agent in Charge Michael Weddel of the ATF’s Washington Division also emphasized the importance of cracking down on straw purchases. “These individuals aren’t just buying guns; they’re fueling violence in our communities,” Weddel said. “We will continue to aggressively pursue those who attempt to circumvent our gun laws.” Assistant U.S. Attorney Kristin B. Johnson prosecuted the case, ensuring Lawton faced the consequences of his actions.
Forty-two months isn’t a slap on the wrist, but it barely scratches the surface of the damage caused by illegal gun trafficking. While Lawton sits in federal prison, the ATF and the Department of Justice remain focused on disrupting the flow of firearms to those who shouldn’t have them, one straw purchaser at a time. The question remains: how many more guns are out there, circulating illegally, thanks to similar schemes?
