NEW YORK, NY – Six members and associates of the notorious Genovese Organized Crime Family have thrown in the towel, pleading guilty to racketeering conspiracy in a federal court here. The guilty pleas represent a significant, if incremental, blow to the decades-old crime syndicate, according to federal prosecutors.
U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, Damian Williams, announced the pleas today, stating, “We remain committed to protecting the people of the Southern District of New York from being preyed on by organized crime. Today’s pleas demonstrate that those who swear a lifetime allegiance to criminal organizations will be prosecuted, no matter their efforts to insulate themselves.”
The first to fall was THOMAS POLI, a Genovese Family associate, who entered his guilty plea before United States District Judge John G. Koeltl on September 29, 2022. He’s looking at sentencing on April 13, 2023. Following suit on February 8, 2023, were NICHOLAS CALISI (Genovese Family Captain), JOHN CAMPANELLA (Soldier), and MICHAEL POLI (associate), all pleading guilty before Judge Koeltl and slated for sentencing on June 27, 2023. The latest admissions came today with RALPH BALSAMO (Captain) and MICHAEL MESSINA (Soldier) also copping pleas before Judge Koeltl, with sentencing scheduled for June 28, 2023.
Court documents detail how the Genovese Family, part of the broader “La Cosa Nostra” (LCN) network, operates through hierarchical “crews.” These crews, led by “Captains” like Calisi and Balsamo, consist of “Soldiers” like Messina and Campanella, and are supported by “associates” like the Polis. The structure is designed for systematic criminal activity, with Captains receiving a cut of the illicit earnings generated by their crews. The path to becoming a “made” member, the indictment reveals, demands proof of either consistent income generation for the Family or a willingness to commit violence.
The guilty pleas center around a litany of criminal enterprises, including extortionate lending, illegal gambling operations, and the transmission of gambling information. Prosecutors allege the defendants were actively involved in these schemes, preying on vulnerable individuals and businesses. The indictment paints a picture of a traditional Mafia operation, leveraging fear and intimidation to maintain control and profit. The roles of each defendant were clear: Captains overseeing, Soldiers enforcing, and Associates facilitating.
Williams specifically lauded the work of the New York Attorney General’s Organized Crime Task Force, the Kings County District Attorney’s Office, and the FBI in bringing these defendants to justice. While the maximum penalties are determined by law – and will ultimately be decided by Judge Koeltl – these convictions send a message that the long arm of the law *is* reaching into the shadows of the Genovese Family.
