Jeff Sessions Appoints Geoffrey S. Berman as Interim US Attorney in New York
Geoffrey S. Berman, a seasoned prosecutor with three decades of experience, has been appointed as the Interim US Attorney for the Southern District of New York, effective January 5, 2018.
Attorney General Jeff Sessions praised Berman’s background, stating that he brings invaluable experience to the role, having been part of the prosecution team that investigated the Iran-Contra matter and served as a federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York.
In his new position, Berman will lead a team of attorneys and investigators, providing safety, security, and peace of mind to New Yorkers, according to Sessions.
Berman’s impressive resume includes stints as an Assistant US Attorney from 1990 to 1994, where he handled complex criminal prosecutions, including tax, securities, and computer hacking violations.
Before that, he served as an Associate Counsel in the Office of Independent Counsel Iran-Contra, successfully prosecuting a former CIA employee for tax fraud.
Berman received his B.A., magna cum laude, from the University of Pennsylvania and his J.D. from Stanford Law School, where he was Note Editor of the Stanford Law Review.
The appointment of Berman as Interim US Attorney comes as a result of the Attorney General’s authority under 28 U.S.C. § 546, which allows him to appoint a US Attorney when the office is vacant.
