Gerald L. Brown Jr., Sex Trafficking of a Minor and Adult, Kansas 2015

Gerald L. Brown Jr., 30, of Wichita, Kan., has admitted to trafficking a teenage girl across state lines for prostitution and forcing an adult woman into the sex trade through threats of violence. Brown pleaded guilty Thursday to one count of sex trafficking of a minor and one count of sex trafficking of an adult by force, according to Acting U.S. Attorney Tom Beall.

The crimes unfolded in the summer of 2015, when Brown recruited a 17-year-old girl and pushed her into commercial sex acts, advertising her on an adult website. He transported her from Kansas to Oklahoma and Texas, profiting off her exploitation as he moved her across state borders to continue the trade.

In July 2015, law enforcement interrupted his operation during a traffic stop in Oklahoma. The minor was removed from Brown’s control and placed into state custody, halting that phase of his criminal enterprise. But instead of backing down, Brown returned to Wichita and immediately sought out another victim.

He recruited an adult woman, then used intimidation and threats of physical violence to force her into prostitution. According to court documents, Brown explicitly threatened to strike her and use violent force if she refused to cooperate—coercion that federal prosecutors say left her no choice but to comply.

Sentencing is scheduled for Jan. 26, where both the defense and prosecution have agreed to recommend a 180-month prison term. The negotiated sentence reflects the gravity of the charges and the damage inflicted on both victims, who were manipulated and exploited for Brown’s financial gain.

The case was investigated by the Wichita Police Department and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Hart, whom Acting U.S. Attorney Beall praised for his relentless pursuit of justice. The conviction underscores the federal government’s ongoing crackdown on human trafficking networks operating in the heartland.
