Gilbert Michael Coriz, Felon in Possession of Firearms, New Mexico 2021

A 35-year-old Santa Fe man is facing federal firearms charges after a shooting incident in January 2021.

According to a complaint filed in federal court, Gilbert Michael Coriz, of Santa Fe, New Mexico, allegedly possessed three firearms and various types of ammunition at a residence on Camino Capitan on January 1, 2021.

Law enforcement responded to a report of shots fired at the residence and obtained a search warrant, clearing and searching the residence and finding Coriz allegedly hiding in a water heater closet in the garage.

Coriz has a history of convictions, including aggravated battery, felon in possession of a firearm, tampering with evidence, possession of a controlled substance, and residential burglary.

As a previously convicted felon, Coriz cannot legally possess firearms or ammunition.

The Santa Fe Resident Agency of the FBI Albuquerque Field Office investigated the case with assistance from the Santa Fe Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Samuel A. Hurtado is prosecuting the case.

Coriz was indicted on December 8, 2021, and arraigned on January 18, and will remain in custody pending trial.

Coriz faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted.
