Glenn Mears, a 46-year-old man from Glenville, New York, is headed to federal prison for a decade after being sentenced to 120 months for distributing and possessing child pornography. The sentence, handed down today in Albany, marks the end of a disturbing case rooted in the darkest corners of the internet.
Mears pleaded guilty to using an online messaging application to distribute graphic child sexual abuse material. Investigators found he not only shared the illegal content but hoarded more than 1,000 images and videos across 10 compact discs, each a digital vault of exploitation. His admissions in court confirmed the material included prepubescent children and victims under the age of 12.
U.S. Attorney Grant C. Jaquith and Special Agent in Charge Kevin Kelly of Homeland Security Investigations (HSI), Buffalo Field Office, announced the sentencing. They made clear that crimes of this nature trigger relentless pursuit by federal authorities. “This sentence sends a message,” Jaquith said. “There is no hiding from justice when you traffic in the abuse of children.”
Sentencing was presided over by Senior U.S. District Judge Thomas J. McAvoy, who imposed a life term of supervised release following Mears’ prison term. During that time, Mears will be under constant federal monitoring. He will also be required to register as a sex offender, a lifelong mark of accountability.
The investigation was a joint effort between HSI and the New York State Police, combining federal reach with local precision. Assistant U.S. Attorney Cyrus P.W. Rieck led the prosecution, methodically building the case that culminated in Mears’ guilty plea and full accountability for his actions.
This case was prosecuted under Project Safe Childhood, a Department of Justice initiative launched in May 2006 to combat online child exploitation. Spearheaded by U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS), the program unites federal, state, and local agencies to hunt down offenders and rescue victims.
