PORTLAND, MAINE – John Whittenburg, 62, of Gorham, Maine, is headed to federal prison for six years after admitting to a sickening habit: collecting child pornography. U.S. District Judge Nancy Torresen handed down the sentence today, alongside six years of supervised release, bringing a grim close to a case that began over a decade ago.
The investigation, dating back to April 2012, started with a probe into the online sharing of exploitative material. Maine State Police and the U.S. Secret Service zeroed in on Whittenburg at his Buxton residence. Confronted with the evidence, Whittenburg confessed to downloading child pornography and willingly allowed investigators to search his property.
What they found was a digital hoard of depravity. Numerous files containing child pornography were recovered from his electronic devices. Among the most disturbing was a video depicting a minor female engaged in sexual activity – a file Whittenburg himself downloaded in October 2011 using a peer-to-peer file-sharing program. The details are intentionally vague to avoid further victimizing the child.
Whittenburg pleaded guilty to the charge on November 21, 2014, but the wheels of justice turn slowly, especially in cases involving the exploitation of children. Assistant United States Attorney Craig M. Wolff, who can be reached at (207) 780-3257, led the prosecution. The sentence serves as a stark reminder that those who prey on children will be held accountable, even for crimes committed in the shadows of the internet.
The Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit and the U.S. Secret Service worked tirelessly on this case, demonstrating a commitment to protecting the most vulnerable among us. While no sentence can undo the harm caused, hopefully this outcome sends a message to others contemplating similar acts. Reporting suspected child exploitation is crucial; resources are available through the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).
This case underscores the ongoing battle against online child exploitation. Grimy Times will continue to follow federal cases like this, exposing the darkness and holding perpetrators accountable. The sentence handed down to John Whittenburg is a small victory in a much larger, ongoing fight to protect children from harm.
