Gorny Charged With Gun Crime

A Pittsburgh resident has been indicted by a federal grand jury in Pittsburgh on a charge of violating federal firearms laws, United States Attorney David J. Hickton announced today. The indictment is a result of a joint investigation by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.

Michael Eugene Gorny, 24, has been named as the sole defendant in the one-count indictment. According to the indictment, on or about July 4, 2012, Gorny, being a convicted felon, illegally possessed a .40 S&W caliber Glock pistol and a 9mm caliber Lorcin pistol. Federal law prohibits anyone who has been convicted of a crime punishable by a term of imprisonment exceeding one year to possess a firearm.

The law provides for a maximum total sentence of not more than 10 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed would be based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant. This case is being prosecuted under Project Safe Neighborhoods, a collaborative effort by federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, prosecutors and communities to prevent, deter and prosecute gun crime.

Assistant United States Attorney Katherine A. King is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The investigation leading to the indictment in this case was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police. The joint effort demonstrates the commitment of law enforcement agencies to combat gun violence and ensure public safety.

An indictment is an accusation. A defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty. The case against Gorny will proceed to trial, where the government will present its evidence and argue its case. The outcome of the trial will determine the fate of the defendant and the severity of the sentence, if convicted.

The indictment of Michael Eugene Gorny serves as a reminder of the consequences of violating federal firearms laws. The government takes gun crimes seriously and will continue to prosecute individuals who illegally possess firearms. The public can expect a thorough investigation and prosecution of gun-related crimes, and those found guilty will face significant penalties.

In conclusion, the indictment of Michael Eugene Gorny is a significant development in the effort to combat gun violence in Pittsburgh. The case highlights the importance of collaboration between law enforcement agencies and the commitment to enforcing federal firearms laws. As the case proceeds to trial, the public can expect a thorough and fair prosecution, and the defendant will have the opportunity to present his defense.
