BOSTON — In a brazen daytime robbery, a Haverhill man handed a teller a note demanding $6,000 in cash at a Santander Bank branch on Commonwealth Avenue in Boston.
The perpetrator, who claimed to have a gun, was caught on camera exposing his skin and thin moustache during the heist. The teller complied with the demand, handing over the cash before the robber fled the scene.
Following the robbery, police reviewed exterior surveillance footage and bank security recordings to identify the suspect. The images revealed a black Ford Fusion sedan, which was later spotted on Dudley Street in Boston. The driver, matching the description of the robber, was Gregory Carter, 58, who was on probation for a prior bank robbery conviction in federal court.
Carter was arrested and charged in May 2017 for the March 25, 2017, robbery. He pleaded guilty to one count of unarmed bank robbery on an unspecified date.
U.S. Senior District Court Judge Rya W. Zobel scheduled sentencing for November 16, 2017. Carter faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, a fine of $250,000, and restitution. The court will consider the U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors when determining the sentence.
The investigation was conducted with the assistance of the FBI’s Violent Crimes Task Force. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kenneth G. Shine is prosecuting the case.
