Gregory L. Thorpe, Jr. False Statement to Acquire Firearm Indiana 2021

FORT WAYNE – In a shocking turn of events, Gregory L. Thorpe, Jr., 28 years old, of Carmel, Indiana, has been sentenced to 84 months in prison for making a materially false and fictitious statement during the acquisition of a firearm.

Thorpe was sentenced by United States District Court Chief Judge Holly A. Brady after pleading guilty to the crime. According to documents in the case, in the summer of 2021, Thorpe purchased a handgun from a licensed firearms dealer and also attempted to make other firearm purchases while providing false information regarding his address of residency during the purchases.

However, his scheme was uncovered during a traffic stop in Hendricks County in May 2022, when one of the firearms Thorpe purchased was recovered from the trunk of his vehicle along with 2.9 kilograms of fentanyl pills.

The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives with assistance from the Hendricks County Sheriff Department and the Plainfield Police Department. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Stacey R. Speith.

This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve to reduce violent crime and gun violence, and to make our neighborhoods safer for everyone.

Thorpe’s sentence includes 84 months in prison followed by 3 years of supervised release. His case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of gun violence and the importance of community involvement in reducing crime.
