On July 8, 2021, the United States Department of Justice filed a federal criminal case against Juan Manuel Guardado-Arias, a 35-year-old Mexican national, in the U.S. District Court for the District of Maryland (MDD Federal District).
Guardado-Arias was charged with one count of ‘Conspiracy to Commit Violent Crime in Aid of Racketeering,’ specifically for participating in a violent street gang that operated in Maryland. According to the indictment, Guardado-Arias was a high-ranking member of the gang and was involved in various violent crimes, including shootings and assaults.
On July 8, 2021, a grand jury returned a superseding indictment, adding additional charges against Guardado-Arias, including ‘Aiding and Abetting,’ ‘Using a Firearm During and in Relation to a Crime of Violence,’ and ‘Being a Foreign National in Possession of a Firearm.’
The indictment alleged that Guardado-Arias and other gang members committed violent crimes, including shootings and assaults, to further the gang’s interests and to intimidate rival gang members. The indictment also alleged that Guardado-Arias was in possession of a firearm during the commission of one of the violent crimes.
Pursuant to a plea agreement, Juan Manuel Guardado-Arias pleaded guilty to the charges on February 10, 2022. He was subsequently sentenced to 72 months in prison.
