In a brazen attempt to escape from the clutches of Guatemalan authorities, five British nationals made a daring bid for freedom on March 8, 1899. The would-be escapees, including engineer J.A. Kirk, reporter Thomas C. Manssill, and commercial traveler Robert Churchill Outhrey, among others, had been imprisoned in Guatemala City on charges related to filibustering activities.
