Guatemalan Rigoberto Cano Perez Pleads Guilty to Illegal Reentry

PROVIDENCE – Rigoberto Cano Perez, a 28-year-old Guatemalan national, has admitted to illegal reentry into the United States, according to Acting United States Attorney Sara Miron Bloom. Perez was deported from the U.S. on November 20, 2024, following his conviction in Rhode Island state court for simple assault and/or battery and disorderly conduct.

The grim revelation came when Immigration Officers discovered Perez’s presence in Rhode Island through an automated biometric fingerprint match on May 12, 2025. He was taken into custody for violating a domestic no contact order and charges of domestic disorderly conduct.

Perez will face sentencing on August 28, 2025, with the federal district judge considering U.S. Sentencing Guidelines and other statutory factors to determine his punishment.

Assistant United States Attorneys Taylor A. Dean and Peter I. Roklan are prosecuting this case, which falls under Operation Take Back America, a nationwide initiative aimed at repelling illegal immigration, eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations (TCOs), and protecting communities from violent crime.

This operation streamlines efforts from the Department of Justice’s Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETFs) and Project Safe Neighborhood (PSN).

Investigations into such cases are conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ensuring that Perez’s illegal reentry is just one more setback for those seeking to defy American immigration laws.
