Pittsburgh Gun-Toting Felon Pleads Guilty
PITTSBURGH – A Pittsburgh resident has pleaded guilty to violating federal firearms laws, United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced today.
Marcus Smith, 23, pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Mark R. Hornak. Smith was found to be in possession of a Glock 9mm pistol with an extended magazine and ammunition on February 2, 2017. This is a serious offense, given that Smith has several prior felony convictions.
Smith is now facing a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison, a fine of up to $250,000, or both. Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed will be determined by the seriousness of the offense and Smith’s prior criminal history.
Assistant United States Attorney Heidi M. Grogan is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. The investigation was conducted by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the City of Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.
This case was brought as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. The program was reinvigorated by Attorney General Jeff Sessions in October 2017.
Smith’s sentencing is set for September 14, 2018 at 9:30 a.m. before Judge Hornak. The court will determine the final sentence based on the evidence presented.
