A Warrensville Heights couple is facing the music after allegedly embezzling nearly $200,000 from a now-closed Cleveland credit union, the Greater Abyssinia Federal Credit Union (GAFCU).
Gwendolyn Dubose, 64, and Kolade Awoyade, 48, were charged in federal court with embezzlement and making false entries in credit union reports and records, according to a two-count criminal information.
The pair allegedly caused the credit union to make false and fraudulent deposits and transfers totaling approximately $191,978 into nine bank accounts they controlled between 2012 and 2015. Dubose served as manager and treasurer at GAFCU, while Awoyade worked as head teller.
The couple’s scheme was discovered when GAFCU attempted to merge with another credit union in November 2015. The merger did not take place, and GAFCU was subsequently closed by the National Credit Union Administration.
Both Dubose and Awoyade are facing one count each of embezzlement and making false entries in credit union reports and records. If convicted, their sentence will be determined by the Court after reviewing factors unique to this case, including their prior criminal record, their role in the offense, and the characteristics of the violation.
The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Carmen Henderson following an investigation by the FBI. An information is only a charge and is not evidence of guilt. The defendant is entitled to a fair trial in which it will be the government’s burden to prove guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
According to the information, Dubose and Awoyade caused the credit union to make false and fraudulent deposits and transfers totaling approximately $191,978 into nine bank accounts they controlled between 2012 and 2015.
The defendants are set to appear in federal court for their arraignment. The case will be closely watched as it unfolds in the coming weeks and months.
