A 47-year-old Hamburg woman has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to defraud the government, authorities announced today. Sheri L. Becirovic, a resident of Hamburg, N.Y., entered her plea before U.S. Magistrate Court Judge H. Kenneth Schroeder, Jr.
According to Assistant U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross, who is handling the case, Becirovic obtained the social security numbers of seven family members and friends. She then provided those numbers, in addition to her own social security number, to a co-conspirator, Clifton Jackson. Jackson used those numbers to file fraudulent tax returns for the tax year 2011, resulting in a loss of $60,961 to the Internal Revenue Service.
The investigation that led to Becirovic’s guilty plea was a joint effort between Special Agents of the Internal Revenue Service – Criminal Investigation Division and the United States Postal Inspection Service. The case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Trini E. Ross.
Becirovic faces a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a fine of $250,000, or both. A sentencing date has not been scheduled.
Clifton Jackson, Becirovic’s co-conspirator, is also a focus of the investigation. His involvement in the conspiracy is still being investigated.
The case highlights the importance of vigilance in protecting sensitive personal information. Becirovic’s actions demonstrate the potential consequences of exploiting this information for personal gain.
The Internal Revenue Service has taken steps to prevent similar cases in the future. The agency has implemented additional security measures to safeguard taxpayer information and prevent identity theft.
