A Clarksburg woman has been sentenced to 35 months in prison for making a false statement during the purchase of a firearm, the U.S. Attorney’s Office announced.
Hannah Marie Elwell, 26, of Clarksburg, West Virginia was sentenced today for unlawfully purchasing a .40 caliber pistol in 2016, United States Attorney Bill Powell announced.
Elwell pled guilty to one count of ‘False Statement During the Purchase of a Firearm’ in December 2016. She admitted to falsely representing that she was the actual buyer of the firearm when she was actually attempting to purchase it on behalf of another person.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Shawn M. Adkins prosecuted the case on behalf of the government. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigated.
Senior U.S. District Judge Irene M. Keeley presided over the case.
Elwell’s sentence was handed down on December 2016, after she pleaded guilty to the crime.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that Elwell’s actions were a serious offense and that she will serve 35 months in prison for her crime.
The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives investigated the case and assisted the U.S. Attorney’s Office in bringing Elwell to justice.
