A Harrisburg businessman has pleaded guilty to federal tax fraud, according to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania.
Paul Biko, 65, pleaded guilty yesterday in Harrisburg to failing to pay federal income taxes and Federal Insurance Contributions Act (FICA) taxes due to the United States for his companies Clearview of Harrisburg, Clearview Landscaping and Clearview Builders in 2008.
The government estimates the loss at approximately $674,969.
The investigation was conducted by the Internal Revenue Service Criminal Investigations, and Assistant United States Attorney Joseph J. Terz handled the prosecution.
Biko is scheduled to be sentenced in April 2016.
Charges are still pending against Maura Mia Whetsel, 31, of Harrisburg, the firms’ former Director of Finance and bookkeeper.
“The guilty plea by Mr. Biko is a significant step towards holding accountable those who cheat the system,” said United States Attorney Peter Smith.
The maximum penalty under federal law is 5 years of imprisonment, a term of supervised release following imprisonment, and a $10,000 fine.
The Federal Sentencing Guidelines will also be taken into consideration by the Judge during sentencing.
