HARTFORD, CT – Seth Watson, 32, of Hartford, is facing serious federal charges after being indicted on April 4, 2017, for pushing deadly synthetic opioids onto the streets of the city. The indictment alleges Watson was distributing fentanyl, furanylfentanyl, and the even more potent U-47700 – a cocktail guaranteed to kill.
According to court documents, the FBI’s Northern Connecticut Violent Crimes Task Force, working alongside the Hartford Police Department, began investigating Watson in February 2017. They received credible information that Watson was dealing heroin and cocaine directly out of a grocery store located on Mather Street. Undercover officers made four separate controlled purchases, believing they were buying heroin. But the lab results told a far grimmer story.
The substances purchased weren’t heroin at all. Testing confirmed the first two transactions contained fentanyl, furanylfentanyl, and the terrifyingly powerful U-47700 – synthetic opioids exponentially more dangerous than heroin. This isn’t just drug dealing; it’s a deliberate poisoning of the community, a callous disregard for human life fueled by profit.
Watson appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Donna F. Martinez in Hartford and pleaded not guilty to two counts of possession with intent to distribute and distribution of these deadly substances. He’s been cooling his heels in federal custody since his initial arrest on March 28, 2017. If convicted on each count, Watson is looking at a maximum sentence of 20 years behind bars – a sentence that still might not be enough to account for the damage he’s caused.
Adding to his troubles, Watson is already on federal supervised release. Any conviction in this case will almost certainly trigger additional penalties for violating the terms of his release, meaning he could face even more time. U.S. Attorney Deirdre M. Daly was quick to point out that an indictment is not proof of guilt, and Watson is presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law. But the evidence, as presented, paints a disturbing picture.
The FBI Task Force – a coalition of the Hartford Police Department, East Hartford Police Department, Connecticut State Police, and Connecticut Department of Correction – continues to crack down on the flow of these lethal drugs. Assistant U.S. Attorney Geoffrey M. Stone is prosecuting the case, and Grimy Times will be following it closely. This case serves as a stark reminder of the opioid crisis gripping the nation and the relentless efforts of law enforcement to stem the tide of poison flooding our streets.
