Alexandria, Va. – In a stunning blow to the drug trade in Virginia, Hatem S. Salem, 56, from Connecticut, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison for conspiracy to distribute methamphetamine, importing GBL with intent to manufacture GHB, and money laundering.
Salem’s long history of criminal activity was marked by a May 2024 investigation that revealed his importation of GBL from China. From August 2024 through January 2025, law enforcement conducted five controlled purchases of various substances including methamphetamine, cocaine, ketamine, MDMA, and LSD.
Agents searched Salem’s Connecticut residence on Jan. 30, uncovering a trove of drugs, chemicals, and equipment for GHB manufacturing. A financial probe revealed complex transactions to conceal his drug proceeds, totaling nearly $370,000 in cash and $171,500 in cryptocurrency.
Salem’s criminal resume includes prior federal convictions for anabolic steroids distribution in 1999, distribution of GBL and GHB while on probation in 2005, and unlawful importation of GBL in 2015. His latest conviction adds to his rap sheet, which now reads like a crime novel.
The sentencing was announced by U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia Erik S. Siebert; Acting Special Agent in Charge of ICE HSI Washington, D.C., Christopher Heck; and Fairfax County Chief of Police Kevin Davis following Senior U.S. District Judge Claude M. Hilton’s ruling.
This case is part of Operation Take Back America, a DOJ initiative aimed at eliminating cartels and transnational criminal organizations. For more information on this case, visit the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Virginia website or search Case No. 1:25-cr-105 on PACER.
