Hawaii saw a significant decline in crime rates in 2017, bucking the national trend of rising crime. According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR) program, the Aloha State reported a 2.2% decrease in overall crime rates compared to the previous year. This downward trend was consistent across the state, with a 3.8% decline in violent crimes and a 1.5% drop in property crimes.
The national picture was different, however. In 2017, the United States as a whole saw a 0.8% increase in reported crimes, marking a departure from the declining crime rates of the previous decade. The FBI UCR program reported a 4.1% rise in violent crime rates, with notable increases in murders and non-negligent manslaughters, as well as aggravated assaults. Property crime rates also rose nationally, with a 2.5% increase in burglaries and a 1.7% increase in motor vehicle thefts.
The opioid epidemic, which was gaining momentum in 2017, played a significant role in the national uptick in crime. As the crisis deepened, communities saw a surge in property crimes related to opioid addiction, including burglaries and thefts. Additionally, the rising number of opioid-related overdoses contributed to the increase in violent crime rates, as individuals turned to crime to fund their addiction.
In Hawaii, however, law enforcement efforts and community programs seemed to be paying off. The state’s low unemployment rate and strong economy contributed to a sense of stability, reducing the likelihood of property crimes. Additionally, the state’s focus on addressing the root causes of crime, such as substance abuse and mental health issues, may have helped to divert individuals away from a life of crime.
The decline in crime rates in Hawaii is a welcome trend, and one that should be replicated across the country. As the nation continues to grapple with the complexities of crime and violence, it’s clear that a multi-faceted approach is needed. By addressing the underlying causes of crime and investing in community programs and law enforcement initiatives, we may be able to reverse the national trend and bring crime rates back down to historic lows.”
