PHILADELPHIA – Gregory J. Stefan, Jr., 54, of Upper Merion, Pennsylvania, is facing a mountain of charges after being indicted on seven counts of wire fraud. The feds allege Stefan systematically ripped off hundreds of grieving families, pocketing their money for headstones he never intended to deliver.

According to the indictment, between January 2018 and September 2023, Stefan, operating through his businesses 1843 LLC and Colonial Memorials, preyed on those at their most vulnerable. He entered into contracts for custom headstones and engraving services, knowing full well he couldn’t – or wouldn’t – fulfill them. The scheme allegedly involved demanding full payment upfront, then leaving customers in the dark as promised delivery dates came and went.

The indictment paints a picture of callous disregard. When customers dared to inquire about their overdue orders, Stefan allegedly either ghosted them completely or strung them along with empty promises, offering assurances of imminent delivery while taking no actual steps to make it happen. It wasn’t just a few cases of delay; the indictment claims Stefan failed to deliver or refund orders from almost 500 customers, totaling in excess of $1.5 million.

Stefan made his initial appearance in federal court this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Jose R. Arteaga. The courtroom was likely filled with the silent rage of those who trusted him to honor their loved ones.
