Health Scammers Targeting NYers in Enrollment Fraud Spree

New YORK – In a stark warning ahead of the 2026 open enrollment period through the NY State of Health Marketplace, New York Attorney General Letitia James and Department of Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald have issued a consumer alert to caution residents about a surge in health insurance scams.

‘As health care costs skyrocket and federal support hangs in the balance, access to affordable health insurance is more important than ever,’ Attorney General James emphasized. ‘We cannot allow predatory scammers to swindle New Yorkers out of their hard-earned money. I urge all New Yorkers to remain vigilant and contact my office if they believe they are the target of a scam or fraud.’

Commissioner McDonald echoed these concerns, stating, ‘It is critical that as New Yorkers enroll or renew their health coverage, they remain vigilant against scams that can put their personal information and access to care at risk. The Department of Health is committed to protecting consumers and ensuring that every New Yorker can access quality, affordable health insurance safely.’

Enrollment in New York’s public health programs – Medicaid, Child Health Plus, and the Essential plan – is open year-round, but state residents must renew their eligibility annually. For commercial health insurance through NY State of Health for 2026, enrollment started on November 1st and must be completed by December 15th to begin coverage on January 1, 2026.

Scammers are exploiting the situation, using fake websites or phone numbers that mimic those of NY State of Health. They may also lie about their affiliation with health plans. The duo warned consumers about fraudulent messages suggesting changes to the “One Big Beautiful Bill” that do not take effect until next year.

New Yorkers should be wary of tactics such as scammers threatening cancellation of health insurance unless a substantial payment is made, or misinformation regarding enrollment rules and tax credits.
