A Texas man is facing serious federal charges after being caught transporting a large quantity of cocaine through Florida. Hector Villarreal, 36, of Pasadena, TX, has been indicted for possession with the intent to distribute 5 kilograms or more of cocaine.
According to the indictment, Villarreal was driving a rental SUV eastbound on I-10 in Lake City, Florida, when he was stopped by deputies from the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office. The deputies had been working collaboratively with deputies from the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office on drug interdiction work.
During the traffic stop, Villarreal told the deputies that he was on federal supervised release for narcotics trafficking out of Texas. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery of sealed cardboard boxes, which contained 30 kilograms of cocaine. A Lowndes County drug canine had alerted on the vehicle, prompting the search.
Villarreal faces a minimum mandatory sentence of 10 years, up to life, in federal prison if convicted. The indictment also notifies Villarreal that the United States intends to forfeit any assets involved in the offense.
The case was investigated by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Columbia County Sheriff’s Office, and the Lowndes County Sheriff’s Office. It will be prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney A. Tysen Duva.
An indictment is merely a formal charge that a defendant has committed one or more violations of federal criminal law, and every defendant is presumed innocent unless, and until, proven guilty. The case against Villarreal will proceed through the federal court system, where he will have the opportunity to defend himself against the charges.
The arrest of Villarreal is a significant blow to cocaine trafficking in the region. The collaboration between law enforcement agencies in Florida and Georgia demonstrates a commitment to combating drug trafficking and keeping communities safe. As the case against Villarreal moves forward, it will be important to watch for developments and see how the prosecution unfolds.
