BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Heriverto Ramirez, a 37-year-old Brownsville resident, has been sentenced for his involvement in a fentanyl trafficking scheme.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s office, Ramirez pleaded guilty to possession with intent to distribute 1,741 grams of fentanyl on July 20, 2023.
U.S. District Judge Rolando Olvera has ordered Ramirez to serve 70 months in federal prison, followed by two years of supervised release.
This case highlights the dangers of fentanyl, a potent and deadly opioid, which is increasingly being used in the illicit drug trade, said U.S. Attorney Alamdar Hamdani.
Law enforcement discovered that Ramirez packaged 494 grams of fentanyl for distribution through the U.S. Postal Service, concealing the dangerous narcotic in the shell of a tankless hot water heater.
During a search of Ramirez’s residence, authorities found an additional 1,247 grams of fentanyl and 8.48 kilograms of cocaine.
Homeland Security Investigations, in conjunction with the Texas Department of Public Safety, conducted the investigation that led to Ramirez’s arrest. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jose A. Esquivel Jr. prosecuted the case.
