Heroin Highway: Serna Gets 12.5 Years

ALBUQUERQUE, NM – A California man is off the streets and headed for a long stretch behind bars after attempting to run a significant quantity of heroin across state lines. Mario A. Serna was sentenced to 151 months – 12 years and 7 months – in federal prison today for his role in a drug trafficking operation exposed in Bernalillo County.

The bust went down on February 26, 2021, when authorities intercepted Serna as a passenger on a train bound for North Carolina. A search revealed over 2 kilograms of heroin cleverly concealed within a false compartment of his luggage. This wasn’t a simple possession charge; Serna admitted in court he intended to distribute the deadly drug once he reached his destination.

Federal sentencing guidelines offer no leniency in cases like these. There is no parole in the federal system. Serna will serve the entirety of his 151-month sentence, a harsh reality for anyone hoping for an early release. Once released, he’ll face an additional three years under supervised release, a period where his movements and activities will be closely monitored.

“This sentence sends a clear message: those who attempt to profit from the trafficking of dangerous drugs will be held accountable to the fullest extent of the law,” stated U.S. Attorney Alexander M.M. Uballez. The DEA, leading the investigation, clearly views rail lines as a potential conduit for drug distribution and remains vigilant.

The Drug Enforcement Administration’s El Paso Division, spearheaded by Special Agent in Charge Towanda R. Thorne-James, spearheaded the investigation, receiving crucial support from the Albuquerque Police Department. Assistant United States Attorney Joseph M. Spindle skillfully prosecuted the case, presenting the evidence that led to Serna’s conviction and subsequent sentencing.

This case underscores the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in the Southwest. While the heroin was seized and Serna is behind bars, the demand remains. Grimy Times will continue to report on the individuals and networks fueling the opioid crisis, bringing the grim realities of federal crime to light.
