Heroin Smuggler Lands 81 Months

WILMINGTON – A federal judge has handed down a harsh sentence to a man caught shipping heroin through the mail.

Jason Brian Bunch, 42, of Littleton, North Carolina, was sentenced to 81 months in prison followed by 5 years of supervised release for his role in a heroin trafficking conspiracy.

Bunch was charged with conspiracy to distribute and possession with intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin and a quantity of marijuana after he shipped 117 grams of black tar heroin to a confidential informant in Nashville, North Carolina, in September and October 2014.

At the time, Bunch was living in Mendocino, California. He was arrested by the Drug Enforcement Administration and Nash County Sheriff’s Office on January 30, 2015, after agents executed a search warrant at his North Carolina home and seized cocaine, heroin, marijuana, and money.

Bunch pleaded guilty to the charges on February 16, 2016, and was sentenced by Senior United States District Judge James C. Fox on May 13, 2016.

The investigation into Bunch’s activities was conducted by the Drug Enforcement Administration, United States Postal Service, United States Marshals Service, Internal Revenue Service, and the Nash County Sheriff’s Office.

Assistant United States Attorney Dena King represented the government in the case.
