Akron man Quentin D. Watson, 35, was found guilty Monday after a week-long trial on charges tied to a fatal fentanyl overdose, possession of methamphetamine and fentanyl with intent to distribute, and using a firearm in furtherance of drug trafficking. The verdict, delivered in the Northern District of Ohio, marks a hard blow against the deadly drug pipeline feeding the region’s opioid crisis.
Watson faces sentencing on March 17, 2022, before Judge Pamela A. Barker. Federal prosecutors tied him directly to the distribution of a fentanyl-laced substance that resulted in a death—an increasingly common and grim outcome in Ohio’s ongoing battle with synthetic opioids. The case was built through coordinated efforts by the Akron Police Department, Akron Fire Department, Summit County Medical Examiner’s Office, Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation, and the FBI.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Aaron P. Howell and Christopher J. Joyce led the prosecution, presenting evidence that Watson not only dealt lethal doses but was armed while doing so—a charge that carries a mandatory minimum sentence under federal law. Jurors deliberated after hearing testimony from forensic experts and law enforcement who traced the fatal dose back to Watson’s known distribution network.
In a separate but equally damning case, Damon Lamont Irby, 45, of Youngstown, was convicted Thursday following a two-day trial before Judge John R. Adams. Irby, a felon with a prior domestic violence conviction, was found guilty of possessing a firearm and ammunition—violating both federal and state prohibitions. He is set for sentencing on March 15, 2022, and is prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason M. Katz.
Also on Thursday, Leonard Walker, Jr., 44, of Elyria, was convicted after a five-day trial before Judge Solomon Oliver. Walker was found guilty of distributing crack cocaine, possessing it with intent to distribute, and being a felon in possession of a firearm and ammunition. His sentencing is scheduled for March 11, 2022. The Elyria Police Department and FBI investigated the case, prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Robert J. Kolansky and Colleen M. Egan.
Meanwhile, Jay A. Schwartz, 55, of Northville, Michigan, was convicted Wednesday in the Eastern District of Michigan on charges of conspiracy to defraud the United States and bribery involving federal programs. Tried over three days before Judge Robert H. Cleland in Port Huron, Schwartz’s case was investigated by the Detroit FBI division and prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Gene Crawford and Michael Freeman from the Northern District of Ohio. He too is due for sentencing on March 17, 2022. These four convictions underscore the federal crackdown on both street-level drug violence and high-level corruption feeding systemic crime.
