A Rapid City man is staring down a federal prison sentence after being indicted on charges tied to a years-long methamphetamine trafficking ring that stretched across tribal and state lines. Galen Cleveland Iron Cloud, 30, was named in a grand jury indictment unsealed in September 2021, accusing him of conspiring to distribute 50 grams or more of meth—a charge that carries a maximum penalty of 40 years behind bars.
The indictment alleges that between August 3, 2018, and May 14, 2021, Iron Cloud knowingly worked with others to move and sell large quantities of meth in both South Dakota and North Dakota. Federal prosecutors say the operation cut through rural counties and tribal lands, exploiting fractured jurisdictions to evade law enforcement for years.
Iron Cloud appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on November 16, 2021, where he formally entered a plea of not guilty. Despite the plea, the weight of the evidence gathered by a multi-agency task force suggests a tightly coordinated drug network. If convicted, he faces not only 40 years in federal prison but also a $5,000,000 fine, lifetime supervised release, and a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may be ordered as well.
The probe was led by the Northern Plains Safe Trails Drug Enforcement Task Force, with critical support from the Oglala Sioux Tribe Police Department, Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services, Corson County Sheriff’s Office, Mobridge Police Department, Rapid City Police Department, and Cheyenne River Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. The collaboration underscores the rampant reach of meth in the region and the growing reliance on joint task forces to dismantle supply chains.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Cameron J. Cook is prosecuting the case, which has been fast-tracked amid rising drug-related overdoses in the Dakotas. Iron Cloud was remanded into federal custody following his arraignment, with no bond issued. He remains in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service as he awaits trial.
A trial date has been set for June 21, 2022. The indictment is an accusation, and Galen Cleveland Iron Cloud is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. But in the battle-scarred streets of western South Dakota, where addiction and violence often walk hand in hand, this case is another chapter in a relentless war against poison peddlers.
