Humberto Herrera, Hobbs Act Robbery, Florida 2016

MIAMI-DADE COUNTY, FL – A five-day reign of terror across Miami-Dade County ended yesterday with a guilty plea from Humberto Herrera, 43, of Homestead. Herrera admitted in federal court to a series of brazen armed robberies that left local businesses shaken and employees fearing for their lives. The spree, occurring between April 28, 2016, and May 3, 2016, targeted a mix of establishments, from fast food to department stores.

Acting U.S. Attorney Benjamin G. Greenberg, alongside ATF Special Agent in Charge Peter Forcelli, Homestead Police Chief Al Rolle, and Miami-Dade Police Director Juan P. Perez, announced Herrera’s guilty plea. The charges stem from robberies at a Little Caesar’s restaurant, an Advance Auto Parts store, a RaceTrac gas station, and a Kohl’s Department Store – all within Miami-Dade County. Herrera pled guilty before United States District Judge Kathleen M. Williams.

The indictment details a consistent pattern: Herrera would enter each business, brandish a firearm, and directly threaten store employees. While cash was stolen from Little Caesar’s, Advance Auto Parts, and RaceTrac, the Kohl’s robbery yielded a significantly larger haul – approximately $33,000 worth of jewelry. The agreed-upon factual proffer paints a clear picture of calculated violence for financial gain.

Herrera now faces a steep price for his actions. He is looking at a statutory maximum of 20 years imprisonment for each of the four counts of Hobbs Act robbery. Adding to that, the firearm charge carries a mandatory minimum sentence of seven years. Combined, Herrera could be looking at decades behind bars. His sentencing is scheduled for July 14, 2017, at 10:00 a.m. before Judge Williams.

“This case demonstrates the collaborative power of federal, state, and local law enforcement,” stated Mr. Greenberg, commending the investigative work of the ATF, Homestead Police Department, and MDPD. Assistant US Attorneys Jonathan K. Osborne and J. Mackenzie Duane are prosecuting the case, ensuring Herrera is held accountable for his crimes.
