In a shocking federal case, 35-year-old Juan Carlos Herrera-Moran was brought to justice in 2004 for his involvement in a violent crime. The defendant’s case, Herrera-Moran, was filed in the United States District Court for the District of Vermont (VTD Federal District) on April 1, 2004.
The indictment, filed by the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of Vermont, charged Herrera-Moran with one count of armed bank robbery, in violation of Title 18, United States Code, Section 2113(a) and (d). The charges alleged that Herrera-Moran, on or about March 5, 2004, did willfully and knowingly take and carry away, by force and intimidation, a sum of money in excess of $1,000 from a bank in Burlington, Vermont.
The case drew significant media attention due to the brazen nature of the crime and the fact that it occurred in a small, typically quiet town. The investigation was led by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and the Burlington Police Department.
On August 25, 2004, Herrera-Moran pleaded guilty to the charge of armed bank robbery. He was subsequently sentenced to 120 months of imprisonment, to be followed by 36 months of supervised release. Herrera-Moran was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $43,500.
