A Hialeah man was found guilty by a Miami federal jury on charges tied to a major cocaine trafficking ring after a five-day trial. Maikel Vigil Gallardo, 35, was convicted of conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute five kilograms or more of cocaine—a charge carrying a statutory maximum sentence of life in prison.
The verdict, delivered in the Southern District of Florida, marks a significant blow to a drug pipeline allegedly orchestrated by Gallardo to move multi-kilogram quantities of cocaine from Miami to Chicago. According to evidence presented at trial, Gallardo met repeatedly in April 2017 with an FBI confidential human source to plan the operation, discussing routes, logistics, and past trafficking runs.
Recordings played during the trial captured Gallardo detailing how he previously moved cocaine and marijuana across state lines using commercial trucking routes and corrupted checkpoints. He boasted of evading law enforcement through bribes and careful coordination—tactics federal prosecutors say reveal the sophistication of his drug network.
The operation unraveled on April 26, 2017, when Gallardo personally delivered a one-kilogram sample of cocaine to the informant in the Orlando area. That handoff, captured on surveillance, led directly to his arrest and subsequent federal indictment. Investigators say the delivery was a precursor to larger shipments planned between South Florida and the Midwest.
Benjamin G. Greenberg, U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of Florida, credited the FBI and Miami-Dade Police Department for their relentless investigation. The case was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Jonathan K. Osborne and Breezye Telfair as part of the South Florida High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) Task Force—an interagency unit targeting regional narcotics syndicates since 1990.
Gallardo is scheduled for sentencing before U.S. District Judge Marcia G. Cooke on April 25, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. Court records and related filings are available through the Southern District of Florida’s public docket at www.flsd.uscourts.gov or http://pacer.flsd.uscourts.gov.
