HIAWATHA, IA – A botched meth cook in Hiawatha, Iowa, ignited a devastating fire that ripped through a mobile home park, and the man responsible is now facing a potential lifetime of consequences. Michael Landon Monroe Lala, 28, of Hiawatha, pleaded guilty January 27, 2015, to attempt to manufacture methamphetamine in federal court in Cedar Rapids.
According to court documents, Lala wasn’t a novice. He admitted to cooking meth repeatedly between April 2012 and May 2014, relying on others to procure the pseudoephedrine necessary for his illicit operation. The November 13, 2013, incident, however, proved disastrous. While employing the dangerous “one-pot” method, a crucial bottle tipped over, instantly erupting in flames.
The fire wasn’t contained to Lala’s immediate workspace. The mobile home where he was cooking was completely destroyed. Five neighboring mobile homes suffered extensive damage, leaving multiple families displaced. Three of those damaged homes were occupied at the time, housing a total of nine adults and four children – a terrifying scenario narrowly avoided becoming a tragedy.
The investigation, a collaborative effort between the Hiawatha Police Department and the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) Task Force, which included officers from multiple agencies including the Linn County Sheriff’s Office and Cedar Rapids Police Department, revealed the extent of Lala’s operation and the reckless disregard for human life. Assistant United States Attorney Dan Chatham is prosecuting the case.
Lala remains in the custody of the United States Marshal as he awaits sentencing before United States District Court Chief Judge Linda R. Reade. He’s looking at a maximum sentence of 20 years’ imprisonment, a $1,000,000 fine, $100 in special assessments, and the possibility of a lifetime on supervised release. This isn’t just about drugs; it’s about the danger these operations pose to entire communities.
