BUFFALO, N.Y. – Raison Holt, 25, of Buffalo, is headed to federal prison after a brazen attempt to evade U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at the Lewiston-Queenstown Bridge. U.S. District Judge Elizabeth A. Wolford handed down a 20-month sentence today, following Holt’s conviction for high-speed flight from a border checkpoint.
The incident unfolded on January 20, 2020, around 6:00 a.m. Holt was driving toward Canada when he inexplicably turned around on the bridge, speeding back toward the United States and the Lewiston Bridge Port of Entry. Ignoring multiple “stop” signs, Holt barreled toward the inspection area, refusing to submit to federal inspection.
A CBP officer at a checkpoint beyond the initial gate gave a clear verbal command for Holt to stop, but the defendant slammed on the accelerator, roaring onto Interstate 190 and then onto the Route 104 exit ramp. A pursuit ensued, with CBP vehicles in hot pursuit of Holt’s speeding vehicle. The chase ended when Holt lost control and crashed into a ditch, attempting a clumsy foot escape before officers subdued him.
The drama didn’t end with the crash. It was quickly discovered that the vehicle Holt was driving had been reported stolen. He was subsequently turned over to the Buffalo Police Department, who held him on an outstanding arrest warrant for Grand Larceny and Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, adding to his legal woes.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Meghan A. Tokash, who prosecuted the case, presented the evidence that led to Holt’s conviction. The investigation was conducted by Customs and Border Protection, led by Director of Field Operations Rose Brophy. The feds made it clear: attempting to outrun the border patrol won’t pay off.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences facing those who attempt to circumvent border security and engage in criminal activity. Holt’s reckless actions not only endangered himself and the pursuing officers but also revealed a pattern of disregard for the law. He’ll have plenty of time to reflect on those choices behind bars.
