Hakeem Kirby, Heroin Conspiracy, Pennsylvania 2014

A Homestead resident has been brought to justice for his role in a heroin conspiracy. Hakeem Kirby, 21, pleaded guilty in federal court to violating federal narcotic laws, announced United States Attorney David J. Hickton today.

Kirby pleaded guilty to one count before United States District Judge Cathy Bissoon. The court was informed that between May 2012 and March 2013, Kirby conspired to distribute and possess with the intent to distribute 100 grams or more of heroin, a Schedule I controlled substance.

The investigation that led to Kirby’s prosecution was a joint effort between the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Pennsylvania Office of the Attorney General, City of Pittsburgh Police Department, Pennsylvania State Police, Allegheny County Sheriff’s Office, McKeesport Police Department, Munhall Police Department, and the West Homestead Police Department.

Assistant United States Attorney Eric S. Rosen is prosecuting this case on behalf of the government. Judge Bissoon scheduled sentencing for April 24, 2014. The law provides for a total sentence of up to 40 years in prison, a fine of not more than $10,000,000, or both.

Under the Federal Sentencing Guidelines, the actual sentence imposed is based upon the seriousness of the offense and the prior criminal history, if any, of the defendant. The court will take these factors into consideration when determining Kirby’s sentence.

Kirby’s guilty plea marks a significant victory for law enforcement in their efforts to combat heroin trafficking in Western Pennsylvania.
