Hugo Gunrunner Caston Gets a Year Behind Bars

MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – Maxie Darryl Caston, 58, of Hugo, Oklahoma, is headed to federal prison after a judge handed down a 12-month and one-day sentence for possessing firearms despite a prior felony conviction. The sentence, delivered by Chief U.S. District Judge Ronald A. White, includes a three-year term of supervised release after incarceration.

The case, investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), stemmed from a September 6, 2024 search of Caston’s Hugo residence. Agents seized a veritable arsenal: one revolver, one shotgun, four rifles, and a substantial quantity of ammunition. Caston, already barred from legally owning such weapons due to a previous felony, clearly didn’t get the memo.

Caston pleaded guilty on March 14, 2025, effectively ending any pretense of innocence. The evidence, according to investigators, painted a clear picture of a man knowingly breaking the law. The sheer number of firearms discovered suggests this wasn’t a one-off mistake, but a deliberate disregard for the regulations designed to keep dangerous weapons out of the hands of convicted criminals.

Federal prosecutors, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Lewis M. Reagan, successfully argued for a significant prison term. The case falls under the umbrella of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a nationwide initiative focused on reducing violent crime and gun violence by bringing together law enforcement and local communities. The program’s renewed focus, launched in May 2021, emphasizes building trust, supporting community organizations, and strategically targeting enforcement.

Caston is currently in the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, awaiting transfer to a Bureau of Prisons facility. His sentence is non-paroleable, meaning he will serve the full 12 months and one day before being eligible for release. This isn’t just about taking guns off the street; it’s about holding accountable those who repeatedly flout the law and put public safety at risk.

The Eastern District of Oklahoma, like many areas across the country, continues to grapple with gun violence. While this single conviction won’t solve the problem, it sends a clear message: possessing firearms illegally carries serious consequences. The ATF and the U.S. Attorney’s Office vow to continue aggressively pursuing these cases, chipping away at the cycle of violence one arrest at a time.
