MUSKOGEE, OKLAHOMA – The grimy streets of Hugo were hit with another blow as John Thomas Worthy, 51, a resident of the town, entered a guilty plea in federal court for Possession of a Machine Gun. This charge comes with a heavy penalty: up to ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
According to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Eastern District of Oklahoma, Worthy was caught red-handed on January 21, 2025, with a firearm modified to shoot more than one round without manual reloading. The modification turns this weapon into a deadly machine gun, a clear violation of federal law.
The investigation leading to Worthy’s arrest was spearheaded by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), who tirelessly worked to bring this illegal weapon out of circulation.
Accepting Worthy’s plea was U.S. Magistrate Judge Gerald L. Jackson, who also ordered the completion of a presentence investigation report. The final sentence will be determined by a U.S. District Court Judge, taking into account the severity of the crime and other statutory factors.
For now, Worthy remains free on a personal recognizance bond, biding his time until sentencing day. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jonathan E. Soverly represented the United States in this case, ensuring that justice is served.
The Hugo community has been placed on high alert once again, as law enforcement agencies continue their relentless pursuit of those who threaten public safety with illegal firearms. This case serves as a stark reminder of the consequences faced by those who play with such dangerous toys.
