Benton, Ill. – In a gritty display of justice, Deveon Humphries, 28, and Dartaniel Pruitt, 27, have been handed down federal prison sentences for their roles in a 2018 marijuana robbery that turned violent in Caseyville, Illinois.
Humphries was sentenced to 144 months behind bars on charges of interfering with commerce by robbery and discharging a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence. The sentencing took place on Monday, November 22, 2021, at U.S. District Court in Benton. Humphries had pleaded guilty to the charges back in May of this year.
The court records detail a chilling September 30, 2018 incident where Humphries arranged a phony marijuana sale with intent to rob the dealer. Armed and with a premeditated plan with Pruitt, they aimed their weapons at the dealer’s witness during the heist. The pair made off with the cannabis, but not without inflicting multiple gunshot wounds on the witness. They fled the scene with the drug proceeds, but law enforcement eventually recovered Humphries’ firearm.
Both defendants were also mandated to serve a 5-year term of supervised release following their sentences. This case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a Department of Justice initiative aimed at reducing violent crime by identifying and targeting the most violent offenders, while partnering with local prevention programs for lasting reductions in crime.
The Caseyville Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives led the investigation into this brazen act. Assistant United States Attorney Alexandria Burns handled the prosecution.
