Hurricane Scammer Gets 30 Years

⏱ 2 min read

An Orlando woman’s desperation turned to greed after Hurricane Ian ravaged Florida in September 2022. Shardae Jackson, 40, lied her way to disaster relief, claiming her residence had been damaged by the storm. But the truth was far from it.

Jackson hadn’t lived at the residence since 2021, when a fire had already made it uninhabitable. But that didn’t stop her from submitting a false claim to FEMA, complete with a forged lease and utilities bill. The agency swallowed the bait, hook, line, and sinker, and handed Jackson $250,000 in assistance funds.

The Department of Homeland Security’s Office of Inspector General uncovered Jackson’s scheme, and she’s now facing the music. Her plea deal puts her in line for up to 30 years behind bars.

U.S. Attorney Gregory W. Kehoe announced the guilty plea, which was secured by Assistant U.S. Attorney Diane S. Hu.
