CROSSETT, AR – Ian Mitchell Ashcraft, 28, of Crossett, Arkansas, is headed to federal prison after receiving a 72-month sentence for the horrific crime of possessing and receiving child pornography. The sentence, handed down by Judge Susan O. Hickey in El Dorado, Arkansas, also includes fifteen years of supervised release following his incarceration. The case highlights the Secret Service’s increasingly vital role in tracking down digital predators.
The investigation began in October 2015 when the U.S. Secret Service flagged an Internet Protocol address actively downloading images of child pornography through the Freenet file-sharing program. Tracing the IP address led investigators to the residence of Ian Mitchell Ashcraft. A search warrant was obtained, and on February 8, 2016, a joint operation involving the Arkansas State Police Cyber Crimes Unit, the Secret Service, and Homeland Security Investigations descended upon Ashcraft’s home.
Agents seized multiple electronic devices belonging to Ashcraft, capable of accessing the internet. A forensic examination of an external hard drive recovered from his bedroom revealed a disturbing trove of images and videos depicting the sexual abuse of children. The sheer volume of material underscored the deliberate and predatory nature of Ashcraft’s actions, according to court records. The investigation was painstaking, requiring specialized digital forensic skills to recover and analyze the evidence.
Ashcraft was formally indicted on federal charges in July 2017 and ultimately entered a guilty plea in September 2017, attempting to mitigate the severity of the impending sentence. However, the gravity of the offense, and the vulnerability of the victims depicted in the recovered material, left Judge Hickey with little room for leniency. The U.S. Attorney’s Office, led by Duane (DAK) Kees, made a strong case for a significant prison term.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Denis Dean successfully prosecuted the case, emphasizing the devastating impact of child pornography on the victims and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable. The Secret Service collaborated closely with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) throughout the investigation, leveraging their expertise in identifying and rescuing child victims.
