Idaho Man Admits Plot to Support ISIS, Attack Churches

COEUR D’ALENE, ID – A 20-year-old Coeur d’Alene man has confessed to a chilling plot to support the Islamic State (ISIS) and carry out a terror attack on local churches. Alexander Scott Mercurio pleaded guilty today to Attempt to Provide Material Support and Resources to a Designated Foreign Terrorist Organization, a charge carrying a hefty potential sentence. The case lays bare the disturbing reality of homegrown radicalization within the Gem State.

According to court records, Mercurio’s descent into extremism began in early 2023. He wasn’t content with simply sympathizing with ISIS; he actively sought to amplify their hateful ideology. Mercurio created an online repository filled with pro-ISIS content, a digital breeding ground for radicalization. While initially dreaming of joining the fight overseas, financial constraints grounded him, leading him to shift his focus to a domestic attack.

The target: churches in Coeur d’Alene. Mercurio meticulously planned an assault for April 7, 2024, intending to unleash violence using an unspecified arsenal of weapons. He didn’t just fantasize; he took concrete steps, purchasing items to facilitate his planned attack. Days before he could act, on April 5, 2024, Mercurio filmed himself standing before an ISIS flag, brandishing a knife, and pledging his allegiance to the terrorist organization – a chilling testament to his commitment.

Fortunately, the FBI intervened. Acting on intelligence, agents arrested Mercurio on April 6, 2024, a mere 24 hours before he intended to unleash terror. The swift action prevented a potential massacre and brought a dangerous individual to justice. U.S. Attorney Bart M. Davis announced the guilty plea, emphasizing the seriousness of the crime and the ongoing threat of domestic terrorism.

Mercurio now faces a maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison. Sentencing is scheduled for January 27, 2026, before Chief District Judge David C. Nye. While a lengthy prison term is likely, it won’t erase the fear Mercurio instilled in the community. This case serves as a stark reminder that the threat of extremism is real, even in seemingly peaceful corners of the country.

The investigation was a collaborative effort, with the FBI taking the lead and receiving crucial support from the Coeur d’Alene Police Department, the Kootenai County Sheriff’s Office, and the Ada County Sheriff’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Heather S. Patricco and David G. Robins, along with attorneys from the National Security Division’s Counterterrorism Section, are prosecuting the case, determined to hold Mercurio accountable for his actions and send a clear message that supporting terrorism will not be tolerated.
