Tredell Long Crow, Larceny and Gun Crime, South Dakota 2024

Tredell Long Crow, a 27-year-old man from Ideal, South Dakota, has been handed down a five-year sentence for his involvement in a larceny and prohibited person in possession of a firearm case. The sentence was handed down by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, on April 24, 2024.

Long Crow was convicted of Larceny and Prohibited Person in Possession of a Firearm after a federal grand jury indicted him in September of 2023. He pleaded guilty on February 1, 2024, to charges stemming from a crime that occurred in July of 2023. On July 15, 2023, Long Crow stole a vehicle from a residence in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, and drove it to a residence in Ideal, on property that is part of the Rosebud Sioux Indian Reservation.

The following day, July 16, 2023, Long Crow was involved in an argument with two individuals in Ideal, during which he brandished and discharged a firearm. This incident occurred despite being prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition due to a 2022 conviction for Possession of a Controlled Drug or Substance in Minnehaha County, South Dakota.

As a result of the convictions, Long Crow was sentenced to five years in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release, and ordered to pay $200 in special assessments to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. He was also ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $1,786.66.

The case was part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program that aims to reduce violent crime and gun violence by bringing together all levels of law enforcement and the communities they serve. The program focuses on fostering trust and legitimacy in communities, supporting community-based organizations, setting enforcement priorities, and measuring results.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office prosecuted the case due to the Major Crimes Act, a federal statute that mandates certain violent crimes alleged to have occurred in Indian Country be prosecuted in federal court. The case was investigated by the Sioux Falls Police Department, the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services, the Tripp County Sheriff’s Office, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kirk Albertson prosecuted the case.

Long Crow was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service following the sentencing. This case serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent crime and the importance of community-based programs in reducing gun violence.
