HAMMOND – The grimy underbelly of financial crime was exposed as Wendell Burts, 25 years old and hailing from Crete, Illinois, faced the music in United States District Court. Chief Judge Jon E. DeGiulio handed down a 27-month prison sentence for Burts after he pleaded guilty to one count of Conspiracy to Commit Bank Fraud, according to a statement from United States Attorney Clifford D. Johnson.
‘Burts’ punishment includes a two-year term of supervised release and a financial obligation of $190,178 to the victim bank that suffered substantial losses due to his criminal activities.
The court documents laid bare Burts’ involvement in a scheme that spanned from October 2020 to June 2021. He collaborated with another rogue actor who worked at a local bank, utilizing their access to customer accounts. This accomplice generously provided Burts with the confidential details of customers, including names, social security numbers, addresses, dates of birth, driver’s license numbers, and account transaction history. With this information, Burts manipulated online accounts, siphoning funds away in an electronic heist.
Records indicate that 11 customer bank accounts fell victim to the dastardly duo’s plot, with their audacious scheme aiming to steal over $480,000. In a testament to their criminal ingenuity, they succeeded in absconding with $190,178. The bank employee who facilitated the fraud has also been charged and awaits his own fate.
This case was meticulously investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), demonstrating law enforcement’s commitment to ferreting out cybercriminals. Assistant United States Attorney Abizer Zanzi spearheaded the prosecution against Burts, ensuring justice would be served.
As Burts begins his sentence and faces a long road to redemption, one thing is certain: the grimy streets of Indiana have lost another mastermind of white-collar crime.
