Peoria Arsonist Gets 10 Years for Planned Parenthood Attack

Peoria, IL – Tyler W. Massengill, 33, will spend the next decade behind bars after being sentenced for the deliberate arson of the Planned Parenthood Health Center in Peoria. The attack, driven by personal fury and anti-abortion beliefs, caused over $1.45 million in damages and disrupted vital healthcare services for the community.

According to court documents, Massengill maliciously set fire to the clinic believing his former partner had obtained an abortion there. The feds say his rage boiled over into a reckless act of violence, endangering lives and creating a climate of fear. The Peoria Fire Department responded to the blaze, but not before significant damage was inflicted on the facility.

Federal prosecutors detailed how the arson wasn’t a spontaneous act. Massengill had been stewing over the situation, and the fire was a calculated attempt to not only express his anger but also to obstruct access to reproductive healthcare. The clinic provided a range of services, including contraception, STI testing, cancer screenings, and yes, abortion care – all now hampered by the destruction.

The 10-year prison sentence, handed down by a federal judge, is accompanied by three years of supervised release upon completion of his term. Massengill is also on the hook for $1.45 million in restitution, meant to cover the extensive costs of repairing and rebuilding the damaged health center. The feds, led by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ronald L. Hanna and Trial Attorney Erin Monju, successfully argued for a harsh penalty, emphasizing the severity of the crime and its impact on the community.

The FBI’s Springfield Field Office, alongside the Peoria Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), conducted the investigation, painstakingly piecing together evidence that linked Massengill to the crime. The case underscores the ongoing threat of violence directed toward reproductive healthcare providers nationwide, prompting a renewed focus from the National Task Force on Violence Against Reproductive Health Care Providers.

Assistant Attorney General Kristen Clarke made a statement following the sentencing, reiterating a zero-tolerance policy for attacks on healthcare facilities. “These acts of violence are unacceptable,” she said. “We will continue to vigorously prosecute those who seek to intimidate and harm those providing essential healthcare services.” The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on any developments as they unfold.
