HOUSTON – Indian national Sanjay Kumar, 43, of Bihar, India, faces serious charges after being apprehended on June 26 for allegedly selling and shipping counterfeit cancer pharmaceuticals into the United States. The grim revelation came from U.S. Attorney Alamdar S. Hamdani.
Kumar is scheduled to appear before U.S. Magistrate Judge Peter Bray this morning at 10 a.m., following his arrest by federal authorities.
The complaint asserts that Kumar orchestrated the shipment of counterfeit versions of Keytruda, produced by Merck and Co., as well as other oncology pharmaceuticals to unsuspecting individuals in the United States on multiple occasions. His conspiracy to traffic in counterfeit goods (drugs) is now under investigation.
If found guilty, Kumar could face up to 10 years in federal prison and a $1 million fine. This case has been investigated by Homeland Security Investigations and the Food and Drug Administration.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Jay Hileman, along with Trial Attorneys Jeff Pearlman and Bryce Rosenbower of the Criminal Division’s Computer Crime and Intellectual Property Section, are handling the prosecution of this case.
The criminal complaint against Kumar is merely an allegation. All defendants are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
