Michael Dean Dubray, a 32-year-old Rapid City man, was sentenced to 30 years and 5 months in custody for his role in the murder of a three-month-old infant. The incident occurred on May 30, 2013, at a home near Oglala when Dubray was left in charge of the child by its mother who had gone out to run errands.
According to the investigation, Dubray became irritated while watching the children and threw the infant to the ground, striking him multiple times. The infant suffered a skull fracture, brain hemorrhages, and laceration of the liver, all of which ultimately led to the child’s death.
Chief Judge Jeffrey L. Viken, U.S. District Court, handed down the sentence on November 17, 2014. Dubray was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund and serve 5 years of supervised release.
The case was investigated by the Oglala Sioux Tribe Department of Public Safety and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Office of Justice Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah Collins prosecuted the case, which stemmed from the infant’s tragic death.
Dubray was turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, bringing an end to a case that shocked the community. The exact circumstances surrounding the infant’s death have left many searching for answers.
The sentence handed down by Judge Viken reflects the severity of Dubray’s crime and the devastating impact it had on the infant’s family. Dubray’s actions have left a lasting impact on the community, and his punishment serves as a reminder of the consequences of violent behavior.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of child safety and the need for vigilance in protecting the most vulnerable members of our society. The community is still grappling with the aftermath of this tragedy, and it is a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of neglect and violence.
