TRENTON, N.J. – A Hunterdon County, New Jersey, man was arrested at his home by U.S. Marshals this morning on a charge that he allegedly sexually abused a woman at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, U.S. Attorney Paul J. Fishman announced.
Ioannis V. Karazoupis, 27, of Flemington, New Jersey, a member of the N.J. Army National Guard, is charged by indictment with sexual abuse. He is scheduled to appear this afternoon before U.S. Magistrate Judge Lois H. Goodman in Trenton federal court.
According to the indictment, on May 4, 2014, Karazoupis engaged in a sexual act with a person who at the time was incapable of appraising the nature of the conduct and was physically incapable of declining participation and communicating unwillingness to engage in a sexual act. At the time of the alleged offense, Karazoupis’ National Guard unit was at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst for training.
The sexual abuse charge with which Karazoupis is charged carries a maximum potential penalty of life in prison and a $250,000 fine. U.S. Attorney Fishman credited special agents of the U.S. Army Criminal Investigation Command, under the leadership of Special Agent in Charge John P. Gueli, with the investigation leading to the indictment.
The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Fabiana Pierre-Louis of the U.S. Attorney’s Office Criminal Division in Trenton. The charges and allegations contained in the indictment are merely accusations and the defendant is considered innocent unless and until proven guilty.
