DAVENPORT, Iowa – A grim day in Iowa as Janard Fitzgerald Goins, a 34-year-old from Iowa City, was sentenced to 108 months in federal prison for Possession with Intent to Distribute a Controlled Substance and Possession of a Firearm in Furtherance of a Drug Trafficking Crime.
Court documents and evidence laid bare at sentencing revealed that in January 2024, law enforcement agents uncovered methamphetamine, crack cocaine, marijuana, $5,877 in cash, and a Glock 17 9mm handgun at Goins’ residence. His phone contained incriminating photographs of the firearm and further evidence pointing to drug trafficking.
Goins, who has a prior felony conviction from Illinois, now faces the harsh reality of his actions. Upon completion of his sentence, he will be subject to a three-year term of supervised release. The federal system offers no parole for such offenses.
The United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa was the one who announced the sentence, underscoring the severity of Goins’ crime. The investigation leading up to this conviction was conducted by the Iowa City Police Department.
This case is a part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a collaborative program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence. Launched on May 26, 2021, PSN focuses on fostering community trust, supporting local organizations that prevent violence, setting strategic enforcement priorities, and measuring outcomes for safer neighborhoods.
